A child is on the way and parents-to-be are - hopefully - very happy. But what to do when it arrives, what forms of parental leave are there and can parents take it together? Who is entitled to what and what happens if the child is adopted or fostered? Don't worry: we've researched all the details for you!

Parental leave is the legal entitlement to time off work: "During this time, there is no obligation to work and the employer does not have to pay any remuneration," explains employment law expert Jasmin Haindl from the Vienna Chamber of Labor. "If only one parent takes parental leave, this is only possible until the end of the child's 22nd month of life, or longer if the leave is shared between the parents - up to a maximum of 24 months."
