Rabbits died of RHD: Caution advised!

Following the death of several rabbits from the infectious viral disease RHD (rabbit haemorrhagic disease) in the last five weeks, the Animal Welfare Department of the Province of Carinthia is appealing for rabbit herds to be examined and vaccinated. However, the viral disease has been known for a long time.

"The ILV Kärnten for veterinary examinations has identified proven cases of the viral disease RHD from breeding herds in different regions across Carinthia. Vaccination of rabbit herds is therefore highly recommended," appeals animal welfare officer Beate Prettner to rabbit keepers and breeders as well as pet zoo operators. This is because the infection of this viral disease occurs very quickly and the affected animals die within one to three days.
