Due to construction work
Lorenz Böhler Hospital: protest against closure
The previously announced protest in front of the Lorenz Böhler Hospital in Vienna started punctually at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Several employees, including the works council, spoke out against the temporary closure of the trauma center due to construction work. There were also threats of strike action.
Many participants wore white doctors' coats at the protest and drew attention to the current developments with banners such as "To save lives, we need beds!". This is because the AUVA wants to carry out construction and fire protection measures that were only announced in February.
According to an expert, rapid relocation is necessary as there are major deficiencies in the area of fire protection. However, staff representatives doubt that the closure needs to take place so quickly.
No job cuts planned
According to the expert, the glaring fire safety deficiencies were only discovered a few weeks ago. The relocation is to take place by April. Until then, the Vienna professional fire department will be on standby at the hospital. During the closure, inpatient services will be provided at the AUVA Trauma Center Meidling and Vienna General Hospital. According to AUVA, talks are also underway with the City of Vienna to secure additional capacity. There are no plans to cut jobs, it was assured.
Further expert opinions
According to the staff representatives, a longer transitional period would be possible. Further expert opinions have also been requested to check whether the closure is really unavoidable. GPA Chairwoman Barbara Teiber and Medical Association President Johannes Steinhart are also scheduled to speak at the rally.
