Driver lost consciousness: Bus rammed into safety island

Dramatic incident in Klagefurt: the driver of a bus lost consciousness - and the vehicle crashed into the concrete crash barrier of a safety island. A trainee colleague (49) had the presence of mind to intervene and prevent the worst.

The professional driver from the district of St. Veit an der Glan was driving his bus on Pischeldorfer Straße at lunchtime when he suddenly complained of health problems - and lost consciousness seconds later. Fortunately, a prospective colleague was on board that day for a training ride.

Passengers remained unharmed
The 49-year-old had the presence of mind to grab the steering wheel - even though she was no longer able to prevent the collision with the concrete crash barrier of a safety island. However, the driver managed to gain control of the bus and bring it to a halt on the oncoming lane after around 100 meters. The six occupants of the bus were uninjured, the unconscious driver regained consciousness and was taken to hospital.
