Six-year-old is the first confirmed case of measles
A six-year-old in the city of Salzburg has had a rash since Saturday and has been taken to the children's hospital. Yesterday, laboratory results confirmed that he is infected with the highly contagious disease measles.
His one-year-old brother now also has a fever. The parents are still symptom-free, according to Rainer Pusch from the municipal health department.
The six-year-old boy attends the Froschheim kindergarten in Plainfeldstraße. He was last on site a week ago. All parents were informed by the city's kindergarten department and asked to check the vaccination status of their children and their own.
The head of the health department adds: "Measles is a serious general illness. This is often underestimated. Only those who have had laboratory confirmation of the virus, have antibodies or have been vaccinated twice are safe. Everyone else is not adequately protected! And: The vaccination is available free of charge for everyone at the public health department (Tel. 0662/8072-4848), at the family doctor (with a replacement voucher from the state) or in the vaccination street in Wals-Himmelreich."
