Hezbollah weapons detonated: quake alarm in Israel

The controlled detonation of an underground ammunition depot belonging to the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia by Israeli troops in southern Lebanon triggered an earthquake warning in large parts of northern Israel on Saturday night.

The Geological Institute in Israel confirmed that the powerful explosion had caused erroneous warnings from the Israeli Civil Defense, according to a report on the ynetnews.com website. "The warning system identified the explosion as an earthquake," the institute said.

Israeli media reported that the acute earthquake warning had frightened many residents of Israel's north, where rocket alarms have been sounding for months due to Hezbollah attacks.

There were similar reports from remaining residents in Lebanese towns near the border with Israel. One resident told the dpa agency: "Our beds were moving, the lamps were shaking back and forth. The noises were terrifying."
