80-year-old falls 25 meters down a steep slope

A hike ended in hospital for an 80-year-old man from St. Pölten. While trying to climb over a fallen tree, the pensioner slipped and fell around 25 meters down a steep slope.

The 80-year-old had set off on a hike with two companions in Gaming in the district of Scheibbs on Sunday. They climbed up to the Herrenalm via the Taglesbach stream in glorious weather, but the serious accident occurred on the way back to the parking lot at around 5.15 pm.

A fallen tree was lying across the hiking trail. According to the police, a notch had already been cut into the trunk to make it easier to climb over. However, the man probably lost his footing and slipped. He subsequently fell down a steep slope and came to rest after 25 meters, seriously injured.

His companions, who had witnessed the accident, immediately set the rescue chain in motion. After first aid on site, the injured man was rescued by the Christophorus 15 emergency helicopter and flown to Scheibbs Regional Hospital.
