Fake policeman takes 350,000 euros

Investigators from the State Office of Criminal Investigation have now made a big catch in Mödling. Through intensive investigations, they tracked down a 26-year-old man who had been luring a lot of money out of pensioners in particular by posing as a fake policeman for almost a year.

The man pretended to be a police officer on the phone and told the victims that a gang had been caught and a list of suspected further burglary targets had been found - including their names. A colleague would pick them up to secure their assets. The suspect had made the calls from a call center in Istanbul, Turkey.

Ten coups
In ten cases in the districts of Tulln and Bruck an der Leitha as well as in Vienna, cash and gold ducats worth almost 350,000 euros were taken from pensioners. In eight other cases, it was only an attempt.

Real investigators have now been able to track down the man in Mödling. He has confessed and is in custody.
