The dark side of light

Life on earth is coordinated with the day-night rhythm. However, the phases of natural darkness are becoming shorter and shorter due to the use of artificial light sources. This is not without consequences for humans and the environment.

Until relatively recently, the open flame was the only known means of illumination used by humans to bring light into the darkness of the night alongside the moon and stars. Around 150 years ago, the first powerful outdoor lighting systems finally went into operation - first in cities, then also in rural areas. Artificial lighting on a large scale extended or postponed working hours and leisure activities far beyond the end of the day.
