Back in July last year, before the final legislative text was negotiated with the EU member states, the EU decision had already caused quite a stir as part of the "Green Deal". Even then, the fronts were clearly divided and in some cases hardened: The European People's Party (EPP), including the ÖVP, railed against the central renaturation law, while the Social Democrats, Greens and parts of the Liberals campaigned for it - supported by thousands of scientists and environmental organizations.
