Brown bear bites child’s hand in Romania

In Romania, a bear bit the hand of an eight-year-old child when he tried to feed the animal from a stationary car. 

The boy was subsequently given medical treatment, but there was no further danger to his health, as the news agency Mediafax reported on Sunday night.

The incident occurred on Saturday in the village of Albesti, around 150 kilometers northwest of the capital Bucharest. The child was traveling with his parents in the car when they noticed the bear and stopped.

The boy then tried to feed the animal from the car. After the child was bitten on the hand, the parents stopped an ambulance, whose staff treated the injury.

Around 5000 brown bears live in the Romanian Carpathians. They are one of the largest populations in Europe. They often attack hikers, snatch sheep and search for food in garbage cans. The authorities repeatedly warn against approaching bears living in the wild or feeding them.
