Asylum dispute erupts between Vienna and the federal states

Following the SPÖ's demand for the compulsory and fair distribution of asylum seekers, there are now strong reactions from the federal states.

Styrian ÖVP state leader Christopher Drexler wants to consistently put a stop to so-called family reunification, especially for Syrians and Afghans. "We already have integration problems everywhere, especially in the cities."

Lower Austria's ÖVP regional managing director Matthias Zauner said: "People entitled to asylum should go where there is work and they can make a contribution to our society, not where there are the highest social benefits."

"Pull factor social benefits"
Salzburg's FP state councillor Christian Pewny says: "Vienna has a problem because some laws have not yet been implemented." Upper Austrian state councillor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP): "This is a purely symbolic debate. Instead, we must finally become more consistent when it comes to immigration into the social system and reduce the pull factor of high social benefits, especially in the federal capital."
