Dominic Thiem survived the 1st qualifying round of the Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid by hook or by crook! 

The Lower Austrian (No. 14) defeated the Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves 6:2, 3:6, 7:5 on Monday and will face the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (8) in the 2nd and final qualifying round on Tuesday (not before 3 pm).

Second match point converted after 2:19 hours
Meligeni Alves took a 2:0 lead in the deciding set and served for the match at 5:4. However, Thiem managed the break, took the next two games and converted his second match point after 2:19 hours.

Ofner already in the main competition
Sebastian Ofner is already through to the main competition, the Styrian will play Argentinian Pedro Cachin in the first round. The two previous duels, both on clay, went over three sets and went once to Ofner (2018 in Sao Paulo) and once to Cachin (2023 at a Challenger in Madrid).

In the new world rankings, Cachin is ranked 91st, 46 places behind Ofner, who dropped three places to 45th compared to the previous week. Thiem dropped five places and is 110th, Yuriy Rodionov is 117th.
