Alarm: wrong-way driver (88) stopped just before the border
Alarm on the Italian A23 freeway near the Austrian border: an 88-year-old wrong-way driver drove his car into the opposite lane and drove eight kilometers in the wrong direction. He also drove through two tunnels before the police were able to block the traffic and stop the vehicle.
As video surveillance footage shows, after mistakenly driving onto the wrong slip road in Ugovizza, the pensioner unknowingly drove against the direction of travel as far as the Tarvisio tunnel.
Heavy fine and driving license revoked
The man was fined 8,186 euros and his driving license was revoked, as was his vehicle for three months.
The incident had already happened on April 12, but was only reported by the police on Thursday.
Almost hitting other vehicles
Several drivers had reported that the car was driving in the wrong direction in the overtaking lane of the highway and almost hit other vehicles. Traffic was immediately blocked at the state border with Austria while a police patrol stopped the vehicle.
