English club Everton FC, who are in danger of relegation, have been deducted a further number of points in the Premier League. This was announced by the league on Monday. The club from Liverpool was again deducted two points for breaches of the profitability and sustainability rules.

As a result, the Toffees have dropped to 16th place in the table and are now just two points clear of the relegation zone. Everton FC announced that it would appeal against the penalty.

The infringements relate to the three-year assessment period up to the 2022/23 season. Previously, the Toffees had already been punished in the current season with the deduction of six points resulting from similar infringements in the period up to the 2021/22 season. Originally, the penalty was even ten points. However, it was reduced to six points in February following an appeal by Everton.

Rules broken
According to the applicable rules, Premier League clubs are allowed to make a maximum loss of 105 million pounds (around 120 million euros) over a three-year period. A commission had come to the conclusion that Everton had exceeded this amount by almost 20 million pounds (just under 23 million euros) in the period up to the 2021/22 season and again by 16.6 million pounds (approx. 19.4 million euros) in the period up to the 2022/23 season.
