Vienna's Austria once again missed out on their first win in the qualifying group of the Bundesliga! The "Veilchen" could not get past a 1:1 draw at home against bottom team Austria Lustenau on Saturday and shared the points for the third time in a row. Dominik Fitz (58') and Lukas Fridrikas (77') both scored from the penalty spot. After three rounds, both teams are still without a win. 

The "Veilchen" remained unbeaten for the twelfth home game in a row, but drew six times in the process. The top duel in the qualifying group against WAC will take place in Lavanttal next Saturday. Lustenau Austria scored in the fourth of five away games in 2024 and could move to within two points of their rivals with a derby win at home to Altach.

Austria had 80 percent possession at times
Austria coach Michael Wimmer had described Lustenau as a "nut" that needed to be cracked first. And so it was. The visitors settled into a 5-3-2 and willingly gave Violett the ball. The home side used 80 percent possession at times to create numerous chances, although very few of them were clear-cut goalscoring opportunities.

In the 17th minute, Andreas Gruber was only centimetres away from opening the scoring when he headed over a bar. Reinhold Ranftl provided the striker, who was free in the five, with a measured cross. After a run of goals at the start of the season, Gruber has only scored once since November ...

Lustenau not even dangerous on the counter-attack
Manfred Fischer had previously come close with a long-range shot next to the corner of the cross (13'), but the Violet captain missed twice miserably before half-time (38'/head, 45'/with a back-heel). In addition, Domenik Schierl was successful with a trip, Lustenau's goalkeeper just managing to get to the ball before Muharem Huskovic was sent into the "alley" (26').

Sportclub, who urgently need points in the relegation battle, did not even pose a threat on the counter-attack. Most of the time, the ball was gone again immediately after being captured. At half-time, Green-White had only completed 53 passes in the opposition half and lost another defensive force in Luca Meisl. The central defender injured his knee in a foul on Fitz and was replaced by Fabian Gmeiner (30').

Penalty for Austria and Lustenau
A penalty seemed to put the favorites on course for a three-goal lead. The Brazilian Chato propped himself up in an aerial duel with Reinhold Ranftl, which referee Stefan Ebner initially allowed to stand. After VAR intervention, however, he revised his decision.

Fitz confidently denied Schierl. The goalkeeper decided against the signals from the coaches' bench, who had gesticulated violently for him to take off into the right corner. The Viennese missed half-chances to make it 2:0, and after a triple substitution the visitors were jubilant.

Romeo Vucic, who had just come on as a substitute, only had eyes for the ball and brought Fridrikas down in the penalty area. The fouled player took advantage of the gift to equalize out of nowhere (77'). The "Violets" seemed dismayed afterwards - and were unable to add to their tally in the evenly poised finish. After the final whistle, some of the 11,242 fans reacted with whistles.
