Primoz Roglic has defended his overall lead at the 63rd Tour of the Basque Country. The day's victory went to Frenchman Paul Lapeira in a sprint. His team-mate Felix Gall lost over three and a half minutes to the field after a crash.

The East Tyrolean, who rides for the Decathlon team, was involved in a mass crash around four kilometers before the finish, as was the Brit Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek), but was able to finish the stage. Gall had already crashed last Saturday at the GP Indurain and got off lightly.

One day after his victory in the individual time trial, the Slovenian reached the finish in the peloton on the 2nd stage from Irun to Cambo-les-Bains on Tuesday, keeping his two big rivals Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard behind him.

Roglic is now ten seconds ahead of the Dane Mattias Skjelmose. Evenepoel, who was slowed down by a crash on Monday, and Vingegaard are in third and fourth place, 11 and 15 seconds behind. The Tour of the Basque Country has a top-class line-up. Only two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar is not among the top riders.
