Finland: Shots fired in school – several injured
Shots were fired at a school just outside the Finnish capital Helsinki on Tuesday morning. According to the police, three children were injured and one has since succumbed to his injuries. The perpetrator was a twelve-year-old who was arrested without resistance.
The emergency call was received at 9.08 a.m. and officers arrived at the school building in Vantaa at 9.40 a.m., according to a statement. One suspect was eventually apprehended, police stated that it was a minor. During the operation, residents were advised to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed.
Principal: "Danger over"
The Viertola elementary school is attended by around 800 pupils aged between seven and 15. 90 staff are employed at the educational institution.
The pupils had to barricade themselves in the building and were eventually escorted out of the school by the emergency services. Principal Sari Laasila has since announced that the immediate danger has passed. Concerned parents had rushed to the school earlier, Finnish media reported.
Perpetrator (12) still had the weapon with him
Nothing is known about the background to the incident, but the police have since announced that the suspected perpetrator is a twelve-year-old who was arrested without resistance. He still had the murder weapon with him and it was confiscated.
Three twelve-year-olds were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, one victim succumbed to his injuries.
