Kirsten Dunst angry:
She only got offers as a “sad mother”
"There are definitely fewer good roles for women my age!" Her Oscar nomination for "The Power of the Dog" in 2021 was her career highlight to date. There was a frustrating reason why Kirsten Dunst didn't appear on screen for two years after that: she indignantly turned down all the "age-appropriate" role offers she received afterwards.
In "The Power of the Dog" by director Jane Campion, Dunst played a single mother named Rose who marries the son of a wealthy cattle rancher (played by her real-life husband Jesse Plemons). Critics celebrated the 41-year-old for her performance. Which is why, according to an interview in the new "Marie Claire", she had expected a career boost. The reality was different: "Every role I was offered was that of the sad mother."
Fewer and fewer good roles
This made Dunst angry because she doesn't understand that there are "fewer and fewer high-quality roles" for women in Hollywood as they get older.
"It was really hard"
The "no" to all the offers was not easy for the mother of two - her sons with Plemons are 5 and 2 years old: "To be honest, it was really hard because I couldn't satisfy my own desire. It's the hardest thing about being a mother ... the feeling of not having anything of your own for yourself. Every mother knows that."
Finally the right script
Luckily for her, she was then presented with the script for her new film "Civil War". She immediately accepted the part of a photographer who tries to capture the American Civil War in pictures and survive. Dunst: "When I finished reading the script, the first thing I thought was that I'd never played anything like this before."
In "Civil War", which will be released in US cinemas on April 12, she is once again joined by her husband Plemons (35) as her co-star.
