An FBI informant has now been charged in the USA for spreading false information about the US President's son Hunter Biden. According to initial investigations, this information came from employees of the Russian secret service (see video above).

Alexander Smirnov admitted this during interrogation. The 43-year-old was arrested at Las Vegas airport last week after returning from a trip abroad. The indictment states that he told lies to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation about alleged bribes that Hunter Biden and his father Joe are said to have received from the Ukrainian gas company Burisma. The informant gave the sum of five million dollars each (the equivalent of 4.65 million euros).

Smirnov's statements have so far played a central role in the Republicans' efforts to remove Joe Biden from office for corruption. The effects of the false information provided in 2020 are "still being felt today", according to the investigators' document.

"Actively spreading new lies"
Smirnov was still meeting with Russian intelligence officers last November and "actively spreading new lies". The investigators fear that this false information could also have an impact on the upcoming US elections in November.

Hunter Biden is repeatedly a target for Republicans. After all, the former lawyer, lobbyist and businessman regularly makes headlines with legal problems. In December, he was charged with evading taxes for several years. He had previously been charged with illegal possession of weapons.

Smirnov himself faces up to 25 years in prison.
