New Switch: Nintendo plans backwards compatibility

Nintendo wants to ensure the compatibility of its Switch games for future console generations. The Switch is currently being used by many customers, "so we have decided that it is best for them to be able to play their Switch software on the successor model," said company boss Shuntaro Furukawa on Wednesday.

Furukawa did not give any specific details about the successor model, which is expected to be announced this financial year by March 2025. However, the planned compatibility could make it easier to switch to the new console and make existing software more attractive.

Since the Switch was launched eight years ago, more than 1.3 billion games have been sold for the platform worldwide. The console itself has sold around 145 million units during this period. Despite its continued success, Nintendo lowered its forecast for hardware sales in the current financial year on Tuesday.
