The thirst of a big city is quenched here

Under the Steinfeld between Wiener Neustadt and Neunkirchen lies one of the largest water reservoirs in Europe. The huge chambers are emptied every four years for cleaning and inspection. The facility will be expanded in the coming years.(Bild: Honorar)

Several soccer pitches in size and ten meters high - the cool water for the Viennese slumbers in the mega reservoir in Lower Austria. In order to meet the growing demand, the reservoir is now being enlarged. But could the water run out and what about the quality of the drinking water?

A small town between Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt with around 2200 inhabitants. This is St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Hardly anyone suspects that one of the largest drinking water reservoirs in Europe is located here on the outskirts of the village. The water from the I. High Spring Pipeline, which is supplied to Vienna, is temporarily stored here.
