Russian troops have attacked the television infrastructure in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, including a 240-metre-high television tower. The top of the tower collapsed as a result of the attack.

Videos posted on social networks on Monday showed the top of the 240-metre tower collapsing - a cloud of explosions can also be seen.

Regional Governor Oleh Synyehubov confirmed that a "television infrastructure object" had been hit. "There are currently problems with digital television reception," he said. No people were reported to have been injured.

Public television referred to alternative reception options for news radio in the region. TV towers in Ukraine have been bombed or shot at with rockets several times since the Russian invasion over two years ago. The aim is apparently to cut off the population from information from Ukrainian sources.

The television tower in Kharkiv, which went into operation in 1981, provides the region with radio and television reception and is located around six kilometers from the city center. The eastern Ukrainian city of over a million inhabitants has been under heavy Russian fire since mid-March. The power supply has already been disrupted and electricity is only available on an hourly basis.
