ÖVP election defeats
Glawischnig: “ÖVP goes through a valley of tears”
In the current "TV duel" between Andreas Mölzer and Eva Glawischnig on krone.tv, one of the topics discussed was the ÖVP's poor performance in the elections in Salzburg and Innsbruck, and possibly also in the upcoming EU elections in June and the National Council elections in September.
The fact is: Innsbruck's mayor Georg Willi from the Green Party has achieved the most votes, in second place is Johannes Anzengruber, who has been pushed out of the ÖVP, both will go into the run-off in two weeks' time. Glawischnig: "I was not surprised by Georg Willi's good result, he is the embodiment of Innsbruck's attitude to life. A very cheerful, life-affirming manner. On the other hand, he is also trying to solve Innsbruck's problems by tackling them."
Much more interesting for the former Green Party leader, however, is the poor performance of former ÖVP state secretary Florian Tursky, who was brought to Innsbruck to run for mayor. Glawischnig: "His candidacy was a complete flop. In my view, the ÖVP is going through a valley of tears. Only ten percent with this effort, Tursky allegedly had the highest campaign expenditure of all parties. They were also very aggressive in terms of poster advertising, which is normally done by word of mouth in a city. They really threw everything into it and then only got ten percent, which is very bitter for the ÖVP.
