After retirement in Estoril
Thiem: “Solid match, it wasn’t bad at all”
Dominic Thiem was knocked out in the round of 16 of the ATP250 clay court tournament in Estoril on Thursday. The Lower Austrian, who had won his first tour-level match of the season in the opening round, was beaten 4:6, 6:7(6) by French veteran Richard Gasquet. "It was ok. I had a solid match on Monday and a solid match today, it wasn't bad at all. It could have gone my way, especially the second set," said Thiem.
He has his new problems with his wrist, which has been damaged since 2021, under control to some extent. "It's under control, but it's not good and not like it was before. But I can deal with it."
"[...] It just doesn't work"
The long-time top ten player emphasized once again that he no longer mourns his glory days. "I no longer compare myself with myself when I was top ten. That just doesn't work. I try to make the best of the situation I'm in at the moment," said the 30-year-old. The former world number three will now continue next week at the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo, where he has to play qualifying.
It was his third defeat against Gasquet in their sixth duel. Thiem last won at least two matches in the main competition on the ATP Tour last September, when he reached the quarter-finals in Astana. So far this year, he has only managed to do so in the qualifiers for Brisbane.
