Dominic Thiem is eliminated from the ATP 250 tournament in Estoril (POR) in the round of 16 against Frenchman Richard Gasquet after 2:02 hours with a score of 4:6, 6:7(6). Thiem missed two set points at 6:4 in the tiebreak. This means that the Lower Austrian has still not won two tournaments in a row this year. He also won his first round match in Zadar, but then lost to Lukas Neumayer in the Austrian duel. It remains a rocky road for the former world number three.

Especially in the first set, Thiem made many mistakes on his own serve. Gasquet, on the other hand, often had the right answer to Thiem's return shots and seemed fresher in his head right from the start. In the third game, Thiem conceded the only break to make it 1:2, which also meant the decider.

Gasquet took Thiem's serve in the very first game of the second set, but the Lower Austrian fought back to break back in the following game. The second set then developed into an evenly balanced affair. At 4:4, Thiem fended off two break points, followed by several service games to zero until the tiebreak. In this, the Lichtenwörth native had "extra time" in a third set on his racket, missed two set points and Gasquet used his first match point to make it 8:6.

Gasquet will now face the winner of the duel between Roberto Bautista Agut and Pedro Martinez in the quarter-finals. Thiem will continue next week at the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo, where he has to play qualifying.
