McLaren driver Lando Norris has snatched pole position for the Mexican Grand Prix with a dream lap. Behind him, Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished second and third. Red Bull star Max Verstappen finished fifth, while championship leader Oscar Piastri (McLaren) disappointed.

Piastri had only finished eighth in the time chase at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez more than 2240 meters above sea level. However, the Australian, who is only 14 points ahead of Norris in the championship battle, benefits from a penalty imposed on seventh-placed Williams driver Carlos Sainz, who will have to start five places further back in Sunday's race (9pm /live in the sportkrone.at ticker).

"What a lap. I don't even know how I did it myself," Norris radioed to the pits in surprise after his fifth pole position of the year. For McLaren, it was the first pole in Mexico since Gerhard Berger in 1990.
