Three seriously injured
Pensioner (73) causes devastating head-on crash
It is unclear why a 73-year-old man from Enns lost control of his car on the B 309 on Wednesday afternoon. Alcohol was apparently not a factor, but the consequences were fatal: he crashed into oncoming traffic. A total of three people were seriously injured in the accident.
The pensioner from Enns was driving his Mercedes from Asten towards Steyr at 12 noon on Wednesday. At Kronstorf, he was approached by a Slovakian truck with a trailer driven by a Ukrainian (57). Directly behind this truck was a panel van in which a 53-year-old man from Maria Neustift and his co-driver (18) were sitting.
Truck and panel van rammed
After the 73-year-old's car suddenly spun out of control and into the left-hand oncoming lane, he first hit the side wall of the truck. His Mercedes then crashed head-on into the 53-year-old's van. The latter was thrown over an embankment by the force of the impact, where it came to rest badly damaged, while the Mercedes came to a halt on the road.
Cut out of the wreck
The seriously injured pensioner had to be rescued from the completely destroyed wreckage by firefighters and taken to Steyr Hospital after being treated by the emergency doctor. The 53-year-old and his co-driver were taken to the accident hospital in Linz.
