Hohe Scheibe: a Mürzzuschlag classic

Take the train to Mürzzuschlag and hike up the 1473-metre-high "Scheibm" on wooded paths - a summit with a view!

Whenever possible, we try to use public transport to get to know new hiking destinations in Styria. A good example of this is the tour to the Große Scheibe - also known as the Hohe Scheibe - which is located to the north of the town of Mürzzuschlag. The majority of the hike leads through the forest, whereby the open summit area impresses with a dream panorama: in front of us lies the Mürztal valley with the Fischbach Alps, and to the north we can see the Schneealpe and Rax region.

The popular Scheibenhütte in the summit area is open all year round at weekends and on public holidays. When the cycle route is open between May 15 and October 15, the hut is a hive of activity. Conclusion: a wooded hike and a summit with a fantastic view!

We start at Mürzzuschlag train station (670 m). At the rear exit of the station area, we turn left and see the yellow signpost towards Scheibenhütte at the crossroads. From now on, the trail climbs uphill through the populated area until we reach the forest shortly after a left-hand bend and see the start of the hiking trail on the right (Scheibenhütte on the Hohe Scheibe). We enter the so-called Bürgerwald forest via a hollow path.

The ascent is very well marked and signposted, so we hike comfortably along forest roads and paths steadily uphill through the forest. At a large clearing, we can already see the summit in the distance. The last section of the trail leads along the access road to the Scheibenhütte, where the summit cross on the Große Scheibe (1473 m) is just a few meters away. The way back is via the ascent route.
