Dangerous wrong-way driving by truck driver in tunnel

A dangerous incident occurred on the Arlberg expressway in Tyrol on Monday. A truck driver (37) turned his vehicle around in the Strenger Tunnel and was driving in the wrong direction. An Asfinag employee prevented the worst from happening. 

At around 12.45, the 37-year-old was driving his truck in the Strenger Tunnel in the direction of Innsbruck. However, the man actually had to drive in the opposite direction. His navigation system therefore asked him to turn. The man blindly obeyed and turned his heavy vehicle around in a niche in the tunnel.

Driven 1.7 kilometers in the wrong direction
The tunnel monitoring system quickly registered that the truck driver was now driving the wrong way and raised the alarm. By chance, an employee of the highway company Asfinag was nearby. He reacted immediately and was able to stop the truck driver after 1.7 kilometers of wrong-way driving.

With a lot of luck, the 37-year-old's action had no consequences for other road users. For the man, however, the wrong-way journey did have consequences. The truck driver will be charged.
