Brazil's heatwave:
Perceived temperature over 62 degrees in Rio de Janeiro
A heatwave that has lasted for weeks in Brazil has brought record temperatures to Rio de Janeiro. According to the weather service, the perceived temperature in the metropolis was over 62 degrees Celsius in some places on Sunday (local time).
In the Guaratiba district in the west of the metropolis, where there are mainly huge slums, a perceived temperature of 62.3 degrees was measured on Sunday, according to the weather service. This was the highest value since such records began in 2014. The real maximum temperature in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday was 42 degrees.
"Drink plenty of water"
For its part, the city administration appealed to the approximately six million inhabitants: "Avoid any prolonged stay in the sun. Drink plenty of water."
South Sudan closes all schools due to heatwave
A look at Africa: The government in South Sudan has ordered the closure of all schools due to the heatwave. In view of temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius, children should not play outside, the Ministries of Education, Health and Environment announced on Saturday. The heatwave is expected to last for two weeks. The ministries warned of "serious health risks". There are already reports of deaths in connection with the intense heat.
Heatwaves are becoming increasingly normal in the East African country. South Sudan is particularly susceptible to climate change, although the thermometer rarely rises above 40 degrees. Periods of drought and increasingly heavy rainfall are aggravating the already difficult living conditions in South Sudan, which has experienced repeated violence and economic instability since declaring independence from Sudan in 2011.
