Why life partners can go away empty-handed when it comes to inheritance

40 Carinthian notaries want to correct legal errors relating to the topics of inheritance and provisions with free advice - until October, every Carinthian can obtain information quickly and easily in the notary's offices or on two days at events in Klagenfurt and Villach.

Last year, hundreds of Carinthians took up the offer from notaries between Bad St. Leonhard and Winklern for a free initial consultation or a free extract from the land register - and Chamber President Werner Stein is expecting another rush at this year's Pension and Real Estate Weeks: "There is a great deal of interest in legal topics; above all, there is still so much half-knowledge that leads to problems."

For example, the myth that you don't need a will because your partner will automatically inherit your house anyway. Notary Katharina Haiden-Fill: "As soon as there are children and people entitled to a compulsory portion, things look different again." Young couples in particular can get into difficulties after strokes of fate if no provision has been made. 2.4 million Austrians have therefore already registered a will.

Thinking about your own future
However, inheritance is not everything - personal provision is also becoming increasingly important. This includes not only personal medical directives, but also arrangements as to which trusted person can make decisions if necessary in order to avoid a court-appointed adult representative. "This costs around 500 euros, but you can really arrange everything exactly the way you want it," says notary Stein.
