32-year-old climber fell to his death

On Sunday afternoon, a 32-year-old man wanted to lower himself to the ground while climbing in Weißkirchen (Murtal district) in Styria. For reasons as yet unknown, he fell and suffered fatal injuries.

At around 3 p.m., a 32-year-old German man and his 28-year-old partner from Murtal intended to lead climb a route in the climbing garden. The 28-year-old was belaying him. The climber climbed the route and was finally lowered.

From a height of around 18 meters
Due to a shortened rope, the two knew beforehand that it would not be possible to lower him completely. When he was at a height of around 18 meters, the 32-year-old probably used a method commonly used in sport climbing to lower himself to the ground.

He subsequently fell. The 28-year-old and other climbers set the rescue chain in motion. The man succumbed to his injuries on site. The cause of the accident and the exact circumstances are currently under investigation by the Murtal Alpine Police.

The Red Cross and the Christophorus 17 rescue helicopter were deployed, as well as members of the Weißkirchen volunteer fire department, officers from the Obdach, Judenburg, Knittelfeld and Scheifling police stations and members of the Murtal Alpine Police.
