Timberwolves withdraw from Superliga!
The Vienna Timberwolves have announced their voluntary withdrawal from the men's basketball Superliga to the second division!
According to a press release, the decision was based on financial reasons and the threat of losing a significant sponsor contribution. A sustainable, secure future did not allow any other responsible option. The Timberwolves had also applied for a license for the second division as a precautionary measure.
"Financial framework conditions for professional basketball in Vienna not given!"
"It is a step of reason, based on the economic conditions," said Vice Presidents Markus Kraetschmer and Stefan Krejcza in unison. "Numerous talks with and in the city did not bring the hoped-for results, the financial framework conditions for professional basketball are not in place in Vienna."
The task now is to consolidate. As soon as there is a viable economic concept for the future, including for the Superliga, a return to the league will be considered. The Timberwolves finished the current season in fourth place in the qualifying round and thus in 10th place overall among twelve clubs.
