End of major project

Instead of a Danube stage, there will now be a sandy beach

After the definitive end to an additional cultural venue north of the Danube, Kaisermühlen will soon be splashing around instead of applauding.

It was one of the flagship projects announced by Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) before he officially took office in May 2018. The city leader dreamed of "Mozart on the Danube", but also of modern music that could take place directly on the river in a suburb.

For a long time, the Kaisermühlenbucht, directly on the banks of the New Danube, was the intended location. The arena for 6000 people was to have been built here. But nothing came of the big stage. Due to the sensitive location, an environmental impact assessment was necessary and local residents also feared noise pollution.

In response to a Krone inquiry, the office of City Councillor for Culture Veronica Kaup Hasler (SPÖ) said that the project was not feasible - due to nature and flood protection. This has been clear since 2021.

The City of Vienna has continuously expanded the cultural offerings in the outer districts in recent years. In addition to the cultural anchor centers, which are intended to act as decentralized, local cultural providers in the districts, plans for a new center for children's culture in Floridsdorf were also presented last autumn. But now the area in Donaustadt is being built on anyway. An attentive "Krone" reader has been able to observe construction activities over the past few days.

Beach feeling instead of a lake festival
Nevertheless, a new recreational highlight awaits the Viennese this season. The Kaisermühlen Bay is currently being filled with sand. The area is to become a new sandy beach with a shallow water zone. Large new trees will provide shade here in future. There are already 63 kilometers of free water access in the federal capital, including some with a beach feeling. The bathing zone will be officially presented today, Friday.
