Trump hints at U-turn in Ukraine policy

U-turn in Ukraine policy? Two days before a planned vote in the US House of Representatives on a Ukraine aid package, former President Donald Trump has called on Europe to support the country attacked by Russia with more money. 

"We all agree that the survival and strength of Ukraine should be much more important to Europe than it is to us, but it's important to us too," Trump wrote on his online platform Truth Social on Thursday.

Compared to the recent past, these are much milder words when it comes to Ukraine. Previously, the presidential candidate said that he would end the war within a few hours of taking office - to the detriment of Ukraine. He regularly disparaged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a greedy businessman. 

Trump misrepresents aid
"How is it that the United States is pouring over 100 billion dollars more into the Ukraine war than Europe, and we have an ocean separating us!" Trump falsely continued. Europe - especially the EU - has released significantly more money than the US at this point.

Although Trump is no longer in office, the former president exerts strong control over many Republicans in Washington who have delayed new military aid to Ukraine. They insist on prioritizing the fight against illegal immigration on the border with Mexico.

Ukraine suffers from gridlock
The stalemate between Democrats and Republicans has left Ukraine short of ammunition and defensive systems in its defense against the Russian invasion.

The House of Representatives is due to vote on new military aid on Saturday. Billions of dollars are earmarked for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. US President Joe Biden has called on Congress to pass the aid and announced that he will sign the bill into law quickly.
