A "Krone" local inspection shows the extent of the damage in the Raggaschlucht gorge and how important the excursion destination is for the Mölltal valley.

Equipped with safety harnesses, Felbermayr employees hang in the steep, rocky terrain of the Raggaschlucht gorge. They are rebuilding the footbridges that were destroyed this winter by mudslides, rock avalanches and fallen beetle trees and torn into the depths. "Not for the first time," sighs site manager Martin Gugganig, recalling the storms of recent years. "Not a season has gone by since 2019 in which we haven't had to replace the gorge due to a storm."

During a tour, the Flattacher shows the damaged areas. "30 boardwalks are affected, 15 of which are completely destroyed." Which brings the total amount of damage to more than 100,000 euros: The removal of the beetle trees by helicopter.

Enormous extent of damage
Heli Austria pilot Augustin Christof shows the Krone the extent of the destroyed forest during a flight over the gorge. It quickly becomes clear: if the dead trees are not removed, they threaten to fall into the gorge.

"We couldn't open it again," adds Gugganig, explaining why the municipality puts so much heart and soul into rebuilding it every year. "This excursion destination is a unique natural spectacle, a magnet for visitors and important for our region."

Thousands make a pilgrimage through the gorge
The fact that the Ragga Gorge is popular is confirmed by the record number of visitors in 2023: "58,000 people from all over the world hiked through." The clean-up work will take a total of five weeks.

On the first weekend in May, the natural spectacle is set to reopen for everyone in its fresh splendor.
