Tolerance, diversity and inclusion - fine words or everyday life in Austrian society?

A recent study* provides insights into how tolerant Austrians consider themselves and others to be, how respectful they are towards one another, whether and how discrimination takes place and how tolerant - but also intolerant - behavior towards the LGBTQIA+ community manifests itself.

The most important results of the study:

  • Self-assessment of tolerance: Three quarters rate their own tolerance in dealing with other people as somewhat or very high.
  • Assessment of the tolerance of others: Less than a fifth see their fellow human beings as somewhat or very tolerant. More than a quarter even see the Austrian population as not very or not at all tolerant.
  • Perception of tolerance: Respondents feel that tolerance is particularly important towards people with disabilities and the elderly.
  • Equal rights: Two thirds say they tolerate and accept all sexual orientations and gender identities. Six out of ten people are in favor of equal rights.
  • Taking action yourself: Less than a fifth actively campaign against discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community themselves.

  • Gender identities: The "many different gender identities and sexual orientations" are confusing for more than half of those surveyed, and a fifth would like more education on this topic.
  • Experiences of discrimination: Two thirds of people in the LGBTQIA+ community have experienced discrimination themselves.
  • Discrimination in the workplace is still present: more than a third of people who are employed and have experienced discrimination have already experienced or observed discriminatory comments themselves.
  • Coming out at work: six out of ten working people from the LGBTQIA+ community have come out in their working environment - one in ten plan to do so.

*For the representative NIVEA UNLIMITED study, a total of 2580 people between the ages of 18 and 75 were surveyed across Austria in spring 2024.
