No clarity yet
Further tests necessary after gas discovery in Molln
The controversial test drilling near the Kalkalpen National Park in Molln confirmed last week, as reported, that there are natural gas reserves there. However, further tests are still required to obtain complete clarity, according to the drilling company ADX.
"We have confirmation of a large deposit, but unfortunately no clear evidence of the exact nature and quantity of the gas reservoir," explained ADX Austria CEO Alan Reingruber on Monday. An initial evaluation of the borehole measurement data shows "the high geological and reservoir complexity of the deposit in the fissured limestone".
Technical problems
Due to technical problems - a sampling tool became wedged in the borehole - there are no reliable results yet. As the nature conservation permit expires on March 31, the borehole will now be cased and sealed for further tests in the autumn.
Continuing in the fall
Ian Tchacos, Executive Chairman of ADX Energy, is nevertheless confident: "The discovery of potentially productive zones in a rock layer over an interval of 356 meters is very promising." Further tests in the fall are necessary, however. ADX now wants to apply for approval to continue in October.
