Eleven years after the crime
Rape! Ex-Real ace goes to prison for 9 years
They may grind for a long time, the mills of justice, but very often the culprits end up receiving their just punishment - as is apparently the case with former Real Madrid and Milan superstar Robinho! Because, contrary to what he thought, the now 40-year-old Brazilian ended up behind bars as a rapist eleven (!) years after the crime ...
A look back: Robinho - whose real name is Robson de Souza - raped a woman together with five other men during his time at Milan in 2013. This was the verdict of a court in Milan in 2017 and later in 2022, the Court of Cassation rejected the footballer's appeal - which should have resulted in nine years in prison.
However, as Robinho no longer lived or worked in Italy, the Italian justice system had no access to the rapist. At home in Brazil, the ex-superstar thought he was safe; according to the constitution of his home country, it is not permitted to extradite a citizen to another country.
"Escape" from punishment ended
However, according to media reports, the Italians have now been successful in their request that Robinho should serve his prison sentence in Brazil if he is not extradited to Italy. The Supreme Court (STJ) in Brazil has ruled that the 100-time international must now serve his nine-year prison sentence in his home country.
This also pleased President Lula, who said in the run-up to the decision: "Rape is an unforgivable crime, so people who do this must be sentenced. Robinho has already been convicted in Italy, he should serve a prison sentence here and be sentenced here."
