Hails criticism nonetheless

Record subsidies for boiler replacement & renovation

The environmental protection organization GLOBAL 2000 criticizes that the federal government's renovation subsidies for real estate are not transparent - and has done its own calculations. Conclusion: The subsidies for thermal refurbishment and boiler replacement have never been as high as they are today.

With estimated total costs of around 100,000 euros for a comprehensive refurbishment including boiler replacement, homeowners can collect between 58,000 and 93,800 euros, depending on the federal state.

Since the beginning of the year, the federal government has been subsidizing up to 50 percent of the costs of thermal insulation and window replacement and up to 75 percent of the costs of replacing the heating system in the form of one-off grants. However, these measures are not only subsidized by the federal government, but also by the federal states. A combination of federal and state subsidies is possible, Global 2000 points out.

Highest subsidy beckons in Tyrol
The thermal renovation of a detached house is cited as an example (comprehensive thermal insulation, window replacement and conversion to a heat pump with deep drilling, total costs 100,000 euros): The federal subsidy amounts to 58,000 euros. When federal and state subsidies are combined, the total subsidy is highest in Tyrol. There, a total of 93,800 euros is granted as a one-off subsidy. The subsidy in Styria is also comparatively high at 86,500 euros.

Well over three quarters of the costs are also covered in Vorarlberg (83,600 euros), Salzburg (83,500 euros) and Carinthia (83,200 euros), while the subsidy in Vienna (68,800 euros) and Upper Austria (67,200 euros) is significantly lower. Burgenland (EUR 61,500) is ahead of Lower Austria, where one-off subsidies were abolished at the beginning of 2024. "This means that Lower Austria can only fall back on the one-off grant from the federal government, which means that a grant of 58,000 euros can still be collected," said the environmentalists in a press release on Thursday.
