Crash landing: Innsbruck Airport closed
A dangerous incident at Innsbruck Airport on Friday: a small plane crash-landed because the landing gear was still folded in. All flight operations had to be temporarily suspended as a result.
According to initial information, it was a small "Piper" aircraft that crash-landed on the runway in the afternoon. Apparently there had been a problem with the landing gear, confirmed Klaus Hohenauer from the country's aviation authority.
Plane skidded across the runway
According to the police, the 66-year-old pilot operated the lever to extend the landing gear and only noticed that the landing gear was still retracted when the twin-engine plane touched down. The aircraft then skidded across the runway with its fuselage and came to a damaged halt.
Airport closed
"The airport was then closed," said an official from the airport police station. However, the clean-up and removal of the aircraft proceeded quickly. The airport was able to resume operations at around 6 pm.
The pilot (66) and his 69-year-old co-pilot escaped unharmed. The consequences for the airport were manageable: only one passenger plane from London had to be diverted to Munich. The small sports plane, which was to be transferred from Switzerland to Innsbruck, is now being investigated to determine the cause of the accident.
