After Kurz's conviction
“Subcommittees are now called into question”
In an interview with krone.tv, former ÖVP Secretary General Maria Rauch-Kallat makes people sit up and take notice: "After the conviction of Sebastian Kurz for making false statements in the investigative committee, the instrument of the U-committee is now being called into question."
"All those who testify in the future are now in danger of being convicted afterwards. Appearing before the committee is mandatory, and you can even be taken into custody if you don't show up. But how well you can remember individual incidents during questioning is not punishable. So the phrase "cannot remember" will be used more often," says Rauch-Kallat.
Nevertheless, she attests to Kurz's many abilities: "Kurz was a great political talent. Above all because of his communication. In personal conversations, he always gave you the feeling that he was there for you." However, the condemnation of the former chancellor will not help the ÖVP in the National Council election campaign, but rather burden Chancellor Nehammer. Despite weakening ÖVP poll ratings, Rauch-Kallat sees his role in a positive light: "Nehammer is carrying the burden of recent years.
For example, the U-excuses to Ibiza or now the proceedings against Sebastian Kurz. But he is still the only party leader of all five parliamentary parties who is ahead of his own party in the polls. So it's not that bad."
When asked why KPÖ PLUS candidate Kay-Michael Dankl, of all people, could become mayor of Salzburg City in the municipal elections on March 10, she says: "He is unusual, obviously a likeable guy, new and brings a breath of fresh air. He is also concerned about housing and ancillary housing costs. However, we must not forget what lies behind communism."
