Case from 1979
Unknown corpses in the water: police ask for help
In September last year, a man was pulled from the Danube in Vienna's Floridsdorf district. He died shortly afterwards in hospital. To this day, the identity of the man has not been established, which is why investigators are now asking for help from the public. Another case shows that the police are not giving up so easily: investigators are still trying to establish the identity of a corpse that was found in 1979.
The year was 1979, October 6, when emergency services pulled a male corpse out of the Danube at Machstraße in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district at around 10 am.
Apparently, the man was not missing, because even more than 44 years later, the identity of the deceased could not be established. "In a case like this, we naturally take all measures and keep investigating to clarify the man's identity. Everyone deserves that," says police spokeswoman Barbara Gass, explaining the current appeal.

The police are once again asking for help from the public in this case. The deceased was a man between 60 and 70 years old, around 1.67 meters tall and had a grey-white moustache. His scalp hair was gray-white and the man had a bald forehead. His left ring finger and index finger were amputated. The man also had a full set of dentures - both upper and lower.
Deceased in hospital
The identity of a dead man in a much more recent case is equally unclear: on September 1, 2023, a man was pulled from the water below the Nordbahnbrücke bridge in Floridsdorf. The man was resuscitated and taken to hospital - but died there.
The identity of the man has also not yet been established. He was about 70 years old, 1.75 meters tall, with grey eyes and grey hair. The deceased was wearing several pieces of jewelry - including a watch and a ring.
The Vienna police are appealing for information that could lead to the identity of the men. Any information is requested - also anonymously - to the Vienna State Criminal Police Office on 01-31310-62800.
