First a landslide, now a rockfall: the Silvretta High Alpine Road in Vorarlberg is becoming a problem area. It is not yet clear how to proceed.

After a landslide fell onto the Silvretta High Alpine Road in Vorarlberg on Friday and the road had to be closed as a result, there was another event of this kind on Saturday morning - a rockslide fell onto the road. In the area of hairpin bends 13 and 14, the popular excursion road was displaced meters high.

The masses of earth came loose above the road at an altitude of around 1960 meters above sea level and finally extended to 1390 meters below the roadway. Fortunately, the road was already closed to traffic at the time of the mudslide due to the rockfall. 

As the police report, "expert bodies" are currently consulting with the road maintenance company, Illwerke VKW, on how to proceed. The Bielerhöhe remains accessible from Tyrol. 

Road very popular with day trippers
The 22.3-kilometre Silvretta High Alpine Road is particularly popular with day-trippers. It winds its way in 34 hairpin bends through high alpine terrain with the Bielerhöhe as the highest point. The winter closure of the route only ended on June 15.
