After the death of Joni (5): fundraising campaign for the family

A family in Krumegg, Styria, has lost their five-year-old son: Following the heavy blow of fate, the local fire department has launched a fundraising campaign to support the bereaved in these unimaginably difficult times. 

Last Wednesday, five-year-old Joni was buried by a mudslide during a walk in the woods. The little boy had no chance of survival, he was buried under 200 tons of earth. An incredible blow for the young family, who had only recently moved back to their hometown.

Now the local fire department - many of whose members dug through the earth with their bare hands to find the buried child - has launched a fundraising campaign. "We wish the young family a lot of strength in these difficult hours. Our thoughts are with you," it says on its website.

Great sympathy
Commander Christoph Rosenberger, himself still shaken by the accident, is overwhelmed by the sympathy shown by the public. "In the first three hours after we set up the donation box in the armory, the parking lot was full all the time."

The donation account will remain open until Friday. "Then we will close it," says Rosenberger.
