Moor oxen have been serving nature for 20 years

It started 20 years ago with 24 oxen and around 800 oxen have been offered to beef lovers in a species-appropriate and enjoyable way over the past two decades.(Bild: Schulter Christian)

20 years ago, the foundation stone was laid in the Zickental valley for a flagship nature conservation project in Burgenland. Since then, the moor oxen have been protecting the largest fen in the Pannonian region.

20 years ago, the foundation stone for a flagship project was laid with the settlement of moor oxen in the "Auwiesen Zickenbachtal" nature reserve - the largest fen in the Pannonian region. This was made possible because 42 farmers from Eisenhüttl, Heugraben and Rohr decided to switch from arable farming to pasture farming. Over the past two decades, around 800 steers have been offered for sale in a species-appropriate manner and ready for consumption.

Ecological balance meets sustainable agriculture
"Thanks to the cooperation and commitment of everyone involved, we have preserved the ecological balance of the habitat and also raised awareness of the importance of sustainable agriculture," emphasizes Werner Sinkovics, farmer and chairman of the "Rinderweide am Zickentaler Moor" association.

"It is not just an obligation, but a matter close to our hearts to protect and preserve this natural jewel."

More than 4000 visitors a year to the moor
The actions of the "Rund ums Moor" and "Rinderweide am Zickentaler Moor" associations have also succeeded in preserving an important habitat for endangered animal and plant species. "It is not just an obligation, but a matter close to our hearts to protect and preserve this natural jewel," says Mayor Gernot Kremsner, chairman of the "Rund ums Moor" association. With the "Lust auf Moor" adventure trail, the association has also succeeded in creating a learning and educational space for nature and climate protection, where more than 2,500 schoolchildren romp around every year and learn why moors are so important for an intact environment. A total of 4,000 visitors were counted last year.
