On the first anniversary of his death
Stamp honors “great Italian” Berlusconi
The Italian government has given the green light for a stamp commemorating former Prime Minister and media mogul Silvio Berlusconi, who died last June at the age of 86. The stamp is to be issued to mark the first anniversary of his death.
"The stamp dedicated to Berlusconi is the right tribute to a great Italian who served and honored the Republic in all the roles he held: as an entrepreneur, sportsman, politician and statesman. With this initiative, for which we have campaigned, we have responded to the wishes of many Italians," explained the Vice-President of the Senate, Licia Ronzulli, who belongs to the Forza Italia (FI) party founded by Berlusconi.
Berlusconi left his mark on Italy
Berlusconi founded the right-wing conservative Forza Italia 30 years ago. It is part of the current governing center-right coalition led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Its leader is Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani.
Berlusconi led four governments between 1994 and 2011, leaving a deep mark on Italy's political scene. It is not for nothing that the neologism "Berlusconismo" is often used in Italy. The term stands for a modern form of right-wing populism. Even before his political career, Berlusconi had built up a network of private TV stations, which soon became by far the largest of its kind in Europe. From 1986 to 2017, Berlusconi was also the owner of first division soccer club AC Milan.
