Good chances for controversial pig farming
New application for approval for the Hubmann family from Gerersdorf in the district of St. Pölten to keep their pigs outdoors: "Chances are good."
The brothers Andreas and Thomas Hubmann have been fighting for more than four years to keep their pigs free-range - the "Krone" has already reported on the farm several times.
The farmers were threatened with the eviction of the pasture for around 500 animals, which spend time in tents in the fresh air. The Hubmanns rely on a system in which the bristle cattle live in mobile shelters instead of stables. They were the first in Austria to practise this form of husbandry. However, it has not yet been approved.
"The chances are good"
Now the chances are good that they will receive approval in the future. Constructive talks with the authorities have already taken place, and Andreas Hubmann is very positive about them. At the beginning of April, the farmer will reapply for a water permit for his pig farm. In addition, researchers from BOKU want to conduct scientific research into this type of animal husbandry.
