Trump: threat of confiscation of his properties

Due to a court ruling in the US state of New York, former President Trump is currently facing the challenge of having to raise almost half a billion US dollars. But so far, the ex-president has been unable to raise the money. His properties are at risk of being seized.

The New York Attorney General's Office is pressing ahead with the potential confiscation of former President Donald Trump's properties. In Westchester County - north of New York - it has filed a court judgment against Trump.

Further legal action to follow
In Westchester County, both a golf course and an estate are owned by Trump. Filing the judgment marks the first step a creditor takes to obtain the defendant's property. Further actions such as placing liens on assets, foreclosing on property or other legal action would follow to seize the asset.

A similar step was also taken in New York City, where Trump owns other properties such as Trump Tower. However, the attorney general's office has not yet taken any action to seize the ex-president's properties in Chicago or Florida. His properties in the South include Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach.

Trump cannot raise millions in security deposit
The possible confiscation of his property is the result of a court ruling in civil proceedings in New York for fraud. According to the ruling, he is required to pay a security deposit of 454 million US dollars. Trump described the judgment as "rigged" and spoke of an alleged conspiracy to sabotage his election campaign.

Deadline expires on March 25
According to his lawyers, Trump cannot raise the sum himself and so far no bail company has agreed to provide the money. The deadline for providing the security expires on March 25. After that, the process to seize Trump's assets could begin.
